 2017 Preview

St. Paul's completed the 2016 season with a 9-4 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 5A region one, the Saints earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. St. Paul's lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Jackson team by a score of 35-9.

The Saints lost as many games as in any season since 2009.

Over the past two seasons the Saints have gone 22-6 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, St. Paul's has gone a combined 79-16. Their 83.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 5A over the past seven seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, St. Paul's has gone a combined 227-87. Their 72.0% winning percentage ranks 4th in Class 5A and 25th in the AHSAA. The Saints have been successful on the football field with twenty-two winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 2008.

The Saints are led by head coach Steve Mask who is entering his sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 58-12 over the past five seasons at St. Paul's. Under his direction the Saints have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times. They have won one region crown with Coach Mask. Coach Mask has won two state championships at St. Paul's, the last coming in 2015.

Coach Mask's overall record as a head football coach in twenty season stands at 158-85 (65.0%). His 158 wins rank th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Mask's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of fifteen times and won six region championships.

The St. Paul's Saints will play in Class 5A region one during the 2017 season.

While most teams rebuild during the off season, St. Paul's has been a consistent winner the past few years and will simply reload this season. The Saints should be considered one of the favorites for the region one championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Saints have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2009 and expect to be included again when November rolls around.

The Saints open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Fairhope on Friday, August 25 at Fairhope Municipal Stadium. Last year the Fairhope Pirates finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in eighth place in Class 7A region one. The Pirates closed out the regular season with a loss to McGill-Toolen by a score of 42-13.

St. Paul's and Fairhope have met a total of 14 times on the football field. The Saints have a 9-5-0 record against the Pirates. They last met in 2016 with St. Paul's winning by a score of 41-14.

St. Paul's returns 5A All-State Senior athlete Jalyn Armour-Davis. He was named to the first team last season. The Saints also return Senior kicker Wilson Beaverstock. He was named to the first team.
